Increase Your Cadence and Climb Efficiently

April 11, 2017 by Andrew Funamoto

Climbing 1,000,000 Feet in 2017

It is our pleasure to introduce to our readers a climbing specialist and new contributor, Travis Streb. Travis is a Vancouver-based cyclist who lives at the base of one of the most daunting climbs in British Columbia. 12km at an average gradient of 8 percent serves as an excellent backyard playground but it also taught him how to climb efficiently.

Climb A Lot, Climb Efficiently

Travis has pledged to climb over 1,000,000 feet to help raise awareness for pancreatic cancer. His cycling club, Glotman Simpson Cycling, has raised over $2,000,000 for pancreatic cancer research to date, and is preparing for it’s 10th year of running the Cypress Challenge. Travis has decided to one-up us all. Suffice to say, he knows a thing or two about climbing.

Throughout the year, Travis will keep us updated on his progress, and contribute his tips to becoming a better climber.

Travis Says: Climb at the Right Cadence

“Climbing on a bike can be a ton of fun and it’s a great way to get a boost to your fitness. The problem is that too many cyclists end up mashing their gears and riding at a very low (and inefficient) cadence. In the first part of this climbing series, we’re talking about climbing at the right cadence and how your gearing (especially your rear cassette) can help you achieve this.”

Three Climbing Tips to Take Away

  • Spin at a high cadence (keep track of it with a cadence sensor):
    • 70-90 RPM
  • Find the right gearing:
    • Make sure you have an 11-28 or 11-32 rear cassette
  • Climb a lot!

Danny MacAskill’s Wee Day Out – World’s Best Rider?

October 19, 2016 by Adam Farabaugh

danny-macskill-wee-day-out
What does your wee day out on the bike look like? Danny MacAskill’s Wee Day Out is pretty impressive to say the least. A nice train ride through the countryside of Scotland with nice little pastries. A few hellos to the locals. And then he throws down some unreal moves that you have to see to believe. Interestingly enough he’s not on a trials bike but rather the Santa Cruz 5010, a full suspension mountain bike. What do you think of this video? How does your wee day out compare? Let us know in the comments below!

The Dutch Reach – It Could Save Lives

October 10, 2016 by Adam Farabaugh

the-dutch-reach
Alright, so it does sound dirty but the dutch reach could save someone from crashing or worse. It’s a pretty simple concept that everyone who parks on the street should be employing. Give it a try the next time you get out of your car and let two people who don’t cycle know as after all, they’re likely the ones who won’t be thinking about the mother riding down the street with her kids in tow when rushing out of the car. And hats of to Outside Magazine for putting this video together! Bike safe!

Riding Where You Wouldn’t Normally – Makken The Tourist Video

This video is in Norwegian but it is ridiculously awesome with incredible views and unreal riding. When you’re riding in places that people don’t normally ride, it gives a sort of feel that you’ve figured out something great that no one else has. Where have you ridden that no one else has?

Downhill Mountain Biking Without A Tire

September 20, 2016 by Adam Farabaugh

mountain-biking-without-a-tire
Downhill mountain bike is crazy to begin with. Riding without a tire just on the rim is ridiculously hard. Both of them together….?? Now that’s something! And how fast he’s still going! Don’t try this at home!

If you think downhill looks crazy, try riding without a tyre…

Tune in this weekend for all the action from #Leogang.

Longest Car-Free Road On the Planet In Canada

September 18, 2016 by Adam Farabaugh

longest-car-free-road
You may have seen this completely car-free highway that was and is still being built in Germany. There’s one that is way bigger and more complete in Canada. It essentially crosses the country east to west and north to south. Which if you know just how big Canada is… The video below isn’t super descriptive of the details but it’s a multi-use trail that goes through some of the most populated areas of Canada which allows for easy access for, well a lot more people. A lot of the trail however resides in areas very remote but with this trail, you can now connect them. Let us know what you think of this trail in the comments below and how much you would take advantage of a trail like this if it were close.

Diamondback Andean – A New, Wind Cheating Machine

September 18, 2016 by Adam Farabaugh

diamondback-andean
Trade shows like Eurobike in Germany and Interbike in Las Vegas as well as events like the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, are venues in which companies frame the release of their new, top products. One revolutionary company and bike is the Diamondback Andean which is a triathlon specific bike that was built for speed. One of its signature design elements is the massive wing-like foil that fills the space between the front and rear wheel.
With innovations like this, bikes and riders simply go faster for the same amount of effort. It’s been toted that new records will be set with this bike but this brings up the question is it the rider, or rider and bike that make a winning combination. Of course if you can afford this bike when it’s publicly available, you can go faster but what about the athlete that can’t, or simply doesn’t want to spend this much money on a bike? They’re almost beat before they roll out on course. Where’s the balance with using the latest in technology and keeping sport at a level playing field? Let us know in the comments below.

The Superman Position On A Bike – Faster Than Pedaling

September 12, 2016 by Adam Farabaugh

superman-on-bike
Wow, this is quite the stunt on a bike, and fixed gear bike none the less! The position that he’s in is known as the superman. Two key things to note in the video in addition to the crazy position, is the scooter driver getting a no-handed shot and the rider clipping back in. Those were impressive as well!
