Top 10 Mountain Bike Brands

August 17, 2016 by Corey Davis

mountain bike brands

Mountain biking is one of the most popular disciplines of cycling and the selection of mountain bike brands out there is enormous. Knowing what kind of riding you plan to do will help decide which brand of bike is best for you. Some of the biggest companies such as Trek, Cannondale and Specialized offer a top of line reliable mountain bike with some of the best technology in the industry. Smaller mountain bike brands such as Niner, Felt, and Santa Cruz offer high performance machines that are a bit more niche marketed toward the high-end consumer market. Below are the top 10 mountain bike brands in our opinion, in no specific order.

The Big Mountain Bike Brands

Specialized

specalized

Specialized offers a full array of bikes depending on the type of riding you plan to do, from cross country to downhill to fat bikes, they have you covered. “From ultra-lightweight XC hardtails to our World-Championship-proven FSR suspension designs found on our trail and downhill bikes, you’ll find the ideal setup for your riding style”. Specialized is one of the largest bike companies in the world, based in California, and focus on technology and innovation. Specialized is a market leader with a lot of other company’s modeling their bikes and ideas after the innovative designs Specialized comes up with.

Cannondale

One of the most innovative designs on the market, Cannondale created the lefty fork making it one of our top ten mountain bike brands. Cannondale’s signature green color schemes and asymmetrical fork give it a stand out look for a top-performing bike. Cannondale’s mountain bike line is focused mainly on cross-country and is making a strong surge in the enduro category of mountain biking. Cannondale has coined many acronyms for any new innovations they develop such as Ai, Si and hologram. All of these new innovations are only available on Cannondale bike’s and makes them some of the best mountain bikes you can purchase.

Trek

Top Fuel 9.9 Race Shop Limited

Trek has the most models available to select from. Trek offers one of the largest women’s specific lines and models from beginner mountain bikers to world cup racers. “Our lineup has every rider covered, from those just beginning to push their limits, to those racing or going for serious air. If you’re seeking a ride to expand your horizons in expansive environs, look no further.” Trek is based in Waterloo, Wisconsin and has always had a strong focus on values and creating the most elegant machine possible.

Niner

At Niner their passion for mountain biking is evident in every product they create. Niner is a relatively new company compared to some of the bigger brands previously mentioned, but that has not stopped them from creating one of the best mountain bikes on the planet. Niner is primarily focused on their mountain bike line, and has become one of the most recognizable bikes amongst different mountain bike brands. Their passion and commitment to making exquisite mountain bikes is seen throughout every bike they design.

Felt

“At Felt, our mission remains as it’s been since the beginning: to design, develop and deliver the best bicycles in the world. Period.” Felt is a company that truly stands behind their statement above; they create quality bikes based on constantly innovating their designs. Felt’s full suspension trail bike is probably one of their most popular mountain bike designs. Felt’s main focus is on performance and creating fast durable bikes.

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is one of the top mountain bike brands available. Santa Cruz only offers mountain bikes, so you can rest assured all of their energy is put into creating the best mountain bike possible. Santa Cruz started like many tech companies in Southern California in 1993 in a single car garage. Now they offer 16 different mountain bike line ups with one of their most popular being the women’s Juliana line. Santa Cruz is known for being a little bit weird and out there when it comes to mountain bikes, but that’s one reason people like them so much!

Giant

Being the largest bicycle manufacture on the planet makes their name Giant a very fitting name. Giant mountain bikes can be found anywhere in the world, and their shear size has helped them become one of the biggest mountain bike brands in the world. The size of the company has helped them create some of the best designs because of the amount of resources they are able to own.

Scott

Starting as a ski company Scott has always been focused on creating the lightest most efficient mountain bike possible. Their mountain bikes have won many world cups and races around the world. In the early days of carbon fiber, Scott broke the world record for the lightest mountain bike frame, something uncommon in the early days of mountain biking.

Yeti

No not the overpriced cooler, the mountain bike brand that is based on passion and creativity. Yeti has created a culture that is focused on having fun and making you feel comfortable and enjoying your time on the bike. Yeti has a simply philosophy, they build bikes they want to ride. With this kind of passion and attention to detail many companies could learn a lot from Yeti.

Kona

Kona found inspiration from the Hawaiian Islands and offer an extensive list of mountain bikes to choose from. Their list of bikes is so long it would be close to impossible not to find a bike that suits you. They even have a place on their website to help you pick out the perfect bike, because of the wide array of lines they offer. Kona is certainly one of the best mountain bike brands because of this.

Weird Inventions for Bikes

September 20, 2015 by U.M.

Weird Inventions for BikesThe cycling industry has some crazy inventions, and some that are so useful that it’s a shame they aren’t more commonly used. Some of these inventions for bikes would be amazing for improving riders’ safety on the road, and some are just beyond unique. Here are ten of the greatest inventions for bikes.

  1. Bike Lane Lights: How great would it be if the white lines that mark the bike lane lit up in bright red at night? Turns out, that’s an actual invention! Bright red LED lights outline the bike lane, creating a high degree of visibility to oncoming traffic. These LED lights can be seen from almost a mile away! Cyclists would have a much safer environment for biking on the road if these were more widely used.
  2. Bicycle Side Car: A small sidecar that attaches to the bicycle, and can be used for transporting groceries or even your child. These are extremely useful, especially because they can be detached and reattached as needed. This is a great tool if you have a supermarket in biking distance, and decreases gas usage by eliminating the need to drive to the store.
  3. Helios Handlebars: These handlebars utilize colorful LED lights, which is great for nighttime riding. There is a powerful headlight on the front, as well as backwards facing lights. They also have a speedometer and GPS chip built-in, thus are one of the most multifunctional inventions for bikes. The cost is $199, but at least you could track the location of your bike if it got stolen!
  4. LifeBEAM’s Smart Helmet: This stylish looking helmet includes a heart rate monitor, eliminating the need to wear a monitor strap on your chest or arm. The helmet monitors your pulse and transmits the information to the device of your choice, such as your smartphone, allowing you to keep track of your progress and see the data in real time as you cycle.
  5. Wireless Bike Lock: The Lock8 bike lock operates wirelessly through transmission from your smart phone, using an app to direct the device to lock or unlock. This is a great way to prevent theft, and also includes a GPS chip for tracking. The device is built to emit a very loud alarm signal if the wire is cut, as well as notify the owner via the smart phone app.
  6. Stick and Find Stickers: These are small, coin sized stickers that allow you to locate lost or stolen items. They can be used for anything, but are a great way to find your bike if it ever gets stolen. They emit a signal that you can track right from your smart phone.
  7. Auto Inflating Tires: Adaptrac offers special tires that are attached to a bike pump. The pump automatically inflates the tires as needed, or based on the type of terrain you’re riding on.
  8. Turn Signal Jacket: Now, you can wear a black jacket that has LED lights on the back. You turn these LED lights on and off using switches by your wrists. This can be used to alert people around you of your intent to turn without taking your hands off the bike.
  9. The Copenhagen Wheel: This is device that sits inside the rim of your tires and is useful for energy conservation. It stores the energy that you put into the bike, such as when going downhill, and that energy is readily available to use the next time you need it, such as up the next hill!
  10. Foldable Bikes: Out traveling and want to go for a ride? Grab your foldable bike and go for a rip!

What unique gadgets do you use for your bike?

Top 10 Tips for New Female Cyclists

September 19, 2015 by U.M.

Getting into a new sport can be difficult both physically and mentally. Cycling is no exception to this and while there are plenty of tips that you can get for new cyclists, not all of them are specific or even helpful to women. For example, many new women cyclists can struggle with confidence in group riding or with understanding the intricacies of a good bike fit. Here’s the top 10 tips for new female cyclists.

1. Nutrition

Nutrition is a daily part of life but it is especially important when you begin cycling. Pro cyclist Tiffany Cromwell recommends that you eat healthy but that you don’t obsess about it either like many women are prone to do. If you focus too much on being healthy you’ll start to lose some of the enjoyment you get from cycling in the first place. Women cyclists should stick to green vegetables, carbs, protein, and water. Eat meals regularly and also eat when you’re on the bike to avoid hitting empty on your fuel supply.

2. Clothing

Many female cyclists will prefer a tighter fitting jersey and shorts that come to roughly the mid-thigh. A tighter jersey will prevent having loose fabric flapping in the wind as you ride and causing air drag. You’ll be more aerodynamic with a tighter jersey and therefore faster. A pair shorts that comes about mid-thigh are ideal. They give you the movement you need without forcing you to pull them down every five minutes should they ride up while you pedal.

3. Gears

You have a big chain ring, a small chain ring, and usually ten to eleven gears in the back. Don’t be afraid to cycle through all of the gears and work up a sweat when you ride. Using the big chain ring will require you to put out a lot more power and is a great way to burn off a lot of calories in not a lot of time. You won’t have an easy ride but you will have a great workout.

4. Saddle

The saddle is very important because it’s where you’ll get the most comfort. It’s also a very personal choice. Some people prefer softer saddles while others prefer a harder saddle. Many women will prefer a men’s saddle, usually with a cut out because of the perceived flexibility and ability to handle bumps in the road more effectively. Before you go to buy a new saddle see if there’s some cycling friends who will let you try theirs so that you can get an idea of what’s comfortable for you or try them at the local bike shop before you buy.

5. Bars

Female riders have a bit of a reputation for taking a bike as-is and often end up with bars that are too wide for them. A good bar width will be the width of your shoulders. Having bars that fit you will improve both your comfort and handling ability.

6. Bike Fit

The bike fit is equally as personal as the saddle because good bikes are molded to the rider, not the other way around. This is when you need to find a very good bike shop who knows how to help with bike fits. They’ll measure your limbs and body to give you a correct frame. Without a good bike fit you could have too long of a reach, too high or low seat post, or any other number of problems which make good form impossible.

7. Ride with the Guys

Riding with men will help you to improve your fitness levels much more effectively than if you ride alone. Men are great race partners and having a group of people (both men and women) you trust will make you feel safer when you ride. Furthermore, being able to keep up or beat the men at a friendly race will boost your confidence in your riding skills and abilities.

8. Confidence

If you aren’t very confident in road cycling, start with a quieter area first and work your up to paths that may take you through heavier traffic zones. Remember that drivers will give you space. They don’t want to hit you anymore than you want to be hit. When you cycle on the road you don’t want to be scared. This will make you hyper aware of your surroundings but will also prevent you from actually training because you may stop frequently, slow down, or simply cut out early. Give yourself time to get used to the idea of road cycling and build your confidence up.

9. Relax

Be relaxed on your bike. When you come down a hill for the first time, the last thing you want to do is to lock your elbows and tense up because you’re scared or uncertain. You want to maintain proper cycling form but you also want to be able to flow with the movements of your bike. Just take a deep breath and stop worrying. You’ll be fine.

10. Looking Good

Looking good is part of the battle especially when it comes to how other riders perceive you. If you’re having a bad day but your bike looks good and all of your cycling gear is properly maintained people (including yourself) will think it’s just a bad day and tomorrow will be better. You don’t have to look the part, but it sure helps!

These 10 tips for new female cyclists will keep you from making some of the common mistakes that many new cyclists make. You should be able to avoid much of the growing pains that come with cycling for beginners and ease your transition into the sport.

10 Awesome Amateur Road Races

September 18, 2015 by U.M.

10 Awesome Amateur Road RacesThere are thousands of bike races held every year around the world. The majority of these races are local and are designed to get bikers in the community involved with the sport of cycling. However, the hardest and most technical of races require dedication and long hours of training in order to complete. Still others are historic, beautiful, and interesting. Here are the top 10 amateur bike races in the world.

1. Iron Horse Bicycle Classic

This race is located in Durango, Colorado and is a very unique race in that bikers don’t race each other but a train. The race is the result of two brothers-one a railroad brakeman and the other a cyclist-challenging each other to a race to nearby Silverton, Colorado.

Officially started in 1972, the Iron Horse attracts hundreds of people from all over the world and is considered to be a celebration of Colorado history and culture as much as it is a bike race. Durango is nestled deep in the Rocky Mountains and the road track is beautiful and challenging.

Details available here: http://ironhorsebicycleclassic.com/

2. Giant’s Causeway Coast Sportive

The sportive runs along Northern Ireland’s coastal roads and is a great race for beginners. Started in 2011, there are three distance options from which a racer can choose from:

  • Causeway Coaster-56 km
  • Glens and Coast Route-125 km
  • Giant Killer-185 km

Giant’s Causeway usually attracts at least 1000 riders, all of whom need good technical skills. The course involves climbing and steep descents that are usually wet due to the regions weather patterns. The race is usually held in September and offers a unique countryside and accommodates riders of all levels.

Details available here: http://www.lincolngrandprix.org.uk/

3. Cycletta

Cycletta is a U.K. wide event first opened in 2011 and is open to women only as an effort to encourage female cyclists at all levels, from any country. The race offers seven different venues that include Cheshire, Cornwall, and East Sussex. Olympic gold medalist Victoria Pendleton is an avid supporter of these races and encourages women to engage in cycling as a sport.

Details on venues, dates, and entry fees available here: http://humanrace.co.uk/events/cycletta

4. Nature Valley Bicycle Festival

This bike festival is held in Menomonie, Wisconsin with a smaller event also held in Stillwater, Minnesota. The Nature Valley festival is wonderful for those who are new to bike races. If you need a race that is laid back and includes the whole family, this may be the race for you.

Details available here: Nature Valley Bike Festival

5. Dresden Race

This is a unique race because it mixes elite, novice, and child cyclists all on the same route. The Dresden race starts and finishes in the historic city of Dresden in East Germany with two different routes of 106 km or 75 km. The Dresden race pairs with the pro Sachsen Tour so that amateurs can race with professionals. There is a separate ride held for children six to thirteen years old. Kids fourteen and older enter with the other amateurs.

Details available here: http://www.sachsentour.org/

6. Green Mountain Stage Race

The Green Mountain race is a four day event packed with races for many different cycling skill levels. Held in the Green Mountains of Vermont, this is one of the largest amateur stage races and has been around for thirteen years. The Green Mountain race has a fun and laid back atmosphere while at the same time offering good competition for any racer.

More information available here: Green Mountain

7. Valparaiso Cerro Abajo Race

The general consensus about this race can be summed up in one word: insane! This race is an urban course in Valparaiso, Chile that involves a steep downhill descent through the street while going over stairs, curbs, nearly crashing in buildings, and maybe dodging some dogs along the way. To prepare for this race, good mountain biking skills are critical because even though the course is urban, the skills are varied.

An incredible first-person video available here: Race Video

8. Maratona des Dolomites

This is a giant amateur race held in the Dolomites mountain range of northeastern Italy. The routes through these mountains are most famous for their role in the Giro d’Italia. However, there is a rich cultural atmosphere and beautiful scenery that many cyclists find exciting. This race can be fairly competitive and attracts over 9000 riders from 40 different countries. This race, is definitely a bucket list item!

More details available here: Maratona dles Dolomites

9. Tour of the Bahamas

Held in Nassau, the Tour of the Bahamas is a three day competition for amateurs. This race involves time-trials, circuits, and road races. The tour boasts highly ranked courses and a professional but fun atmosphere for the riders. Not only will you be biking one of the most beautiful islands of the region but you’ll be staying in resorts with fellow cyclists from around the world. The competition is also open to both adults and juniors.

Details on registration available here: Bahama’s Tour

10. UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT)

While UCI normally offers races to professionals exclusively, since 2011 they have put on an amateur world tour that ends with the Amateur Road World Championships. Participants in the tour will have to attend qualifying events in order to reach the world championships, however. Races are held all over the world and each year the world championship brings together cyclists from at least 50 countries. UWCT is a wonderful way for amateur racers to get a taste of what professional cycling is all about.

Details available here: UWCT

No matter what your skill level at least one of these races will be available to you. Some are supportive of good causes and others are something to work toward as the trail is grueling and difficult.

Best Bike Brands

Best Bike Brands

Everyone keeps asking what are the best bike brands? There is no one answer fits all. It depends what kind of cycling you are doing! Road biking, Mountain biking, commuting, triathlon, cross? Nevertheless, I do pick my favourite bike brands based on the type of cycling I am doing.

Truthfully, if you want to find the best bike you should decide on your price range first, then determine what kind of qualities you value most ie. ride feel (comfort, stiffness, handling) then look at which bike brands offer models of bikes that fit your criteria. That being said, there are industry leaders in certain categories but realize that by blindly selecting one model of a bike brand over another it is a style choice and not a performance choice.

Best Road Bike Brands

Selecting the best road bike brand is no easy task. There are thousands of models to choose from and price point is an incredibly important variable. Below is a list of the best mid range to high end bike brands on the market with a picture of one of their bikes. Best Triathlon Bike Brands

For the best bike brands in the triathlon series I refer to Kona. As you may or may not know Kona is home to the Ironman World Championships and is arguably composed of the most well informed riders on the planet.

Cervelo

Cervelo continues to dominate the triathlon field at Kona or at any triathlon generally representing double or more of it’s closest competitor. Cervelo’s triathlon P series has a fantastic combination of aerodynamics, comfort and speed.

Trek

In 2009 Trek came out with the Speed Concept and blew everyone’s mind on how sleek the ride looked with all of its components so perfectly integrated. Many of the triathlon bikes these days have adopted Treks style. In the popularity contest, Trek is the second most popular bike ridden at Ironmans.

Specialized

Specialized now has the SHIV which is boasted to be stiff and amazing in cross-winds. It doesn’t hurt that Tony Martin won the UCI Time Trial World Championships on it back in 2013.

Felt

Felt has a wide range of triathlon bikes that appeal to the beginner all the way up to the elite. Felt is continually rising in popularity in the triathlon world.

BMC

Rounding up the top 5 in the best triathlon bike brands is BMC. The timemachine has become a very successful bike since 2011 and 2012 when Cadel Evans road to Tour de France Victory and Andrea Raelert established a new world record over the Ironman distance.

10 Reasons to Commute to Work on Bike

October 28, 2014 by Aaron Robson

10 Reasons to Commute to Work on Bike

commute to work on bike

Biking to work is more popular than ever before in North America, but in case you need a little extra motivation, here are 10 reasons to reach for your bike lock instead of the car keys as you leave for work in the morning.

Better substitute for coffee

There is nothing quite like a morning ride to blow out the cobwebs and get your mind and body going in the morning. It also gives you some precious time to let your mind wander between the hectic morning routine at your house, and the inevitable pile of messages waiting to be answered when you arrive at work.

Multitasking your daily exercise

Everyone knows that a little exercise every day has huge health benefits, but many of us struggle to find the time to get to the gym, or just lack the motivation to go after a long day at work. Commuting is what I like to call efficient exercise – sure it might take you a little longer than it would to drive (or maybe not, depending on how bad traffic is), but it provides an easy way to get some exercise in, without needing to work up the motivation and block out the time for a gym visit.

Boost your mood

I can’t count the number of times that I have woken up grouchy and grumpy, only to be all smiles at work after twenty minutes on the bike. Exercise releases endorphins, the natural ‘feel-good’ chemicals that our body produces, and morning is the best time to start them flowing.

Save on gas and parking

On the practical side of things, biking to work can save you a decent chunk of change, especially if you work downtown in a big city. If your work doesn’t offer free parking (and many companies are moving towards this as a means of encouraging other methods of transportation) parking fees can be hundreds of dollars a month, on top of $$$ for gas. That will buy you a new bike each year if you want, or give you a nice stash of beer money if that is more your preference.

Do your part to reduce congestion

Traffic in cities seems to get worse and worse every year, as growth rates outpace our ability to build new roads. We are also running out of space to put these roads in the densely populated urban cores. Alternative means of transportation are the best way of reducing congestion and improving air quality, and there is no better option than commuting to work on a bike.

Get back in touch with your surroundings

In a car, you get whisked along in an isolated, air conditioned bubble, largely cut off from the sights, sounds and smells around you. Biking puts you smack in the middle of all of it, and gives you a chance to connect with your environment – something experts say contributes to overall well-being and happiness.

Show off your new bod

You’ve been riding seriously for a few months now. The pounds falling off, and your body no longer fills the round hole in the sofa it once occupied every night. Maybe you want to show off a little bit – it’s only natural. There’s no better way to display the fruits of your labour than a long walk through the office in your bike gear. Sure you will get a few stares, but really – they are just jealous!

An excuse to buy another bicycle

Following the rule that the correct number of bicycles to own is one more than the number you already have, commuting to work gives you the perfect opportunity to add to your stable of rides. Perhaps a nice custom made steel frame, properly equipped with matching metal fenders, racks and and old-school leather saddle…

Prius owners can no longer brag about their MPG

55 miles per gallon is pretty good, but nothing compares to a bicycle in terms of energy-efficient transportation. It is a little tricky to compare since humans don’t run on premium unleaded, but studies that have compared the energy use per person per mile for bikes and other means of transport have always put bikes at the very top – anywhere from 10 to 100 times more efficient than even a fuel-efficient hybrid.

The opposite sex likes it

There is no denying it – green is in right now, and I’m not talking about the dark leafy shade of that new shirt you just bought. Environmentalism has taken off, particularly amongst the hip, young, educated people that dominate the social scene in most major cities in North America, and bike riding has goes hand in hand with it. Taking your bike straight from work to happy hour might not just help save the planet, but your love life too!

5 Reasons Why Cyclists Shave Their Legs

October 12, 2014 by Craig Richey

Just about every serious cyclist has been asked at some point, why do cyclist shave their legs? This question comes up all the time, from hanging around the water cooler at the office to a first date. The idea of a guy shaving their legs just seems to perplex people plus it is an easy conversation starter that generally leads to a fun discussion. Yet many bike riders don’t actually know the reason shaving your legs is a cycling thing.

  1. Road Rash – This is far and away the biggest reason why serious racers shave their legs. In racing crashes happen and cleaning grit out of road rash without any hair tangled in there is unpleasant enough. Anyone that has scrubbed grit out of a hairy leg wound will become a devout leg shaver. However, most enthusiast riders go years between major crashes so this really isn’t a justifiaShaved Legs Cyclistble reason why a lot of people shave their legs.
  2. Massage – Getting a deep tissue massage with hairy legs sucks. It pulls on your hair and the oily hairy legs are a mess after. Professional riders get massages multiple times a week and most amateur racers, if they can afford it, have massages a few times a month. Massage helps with recovery and avoiding injury. However, like road rash most enthusiast cyclists do not get massages frequent enough to justify shaving their grizzly sticks.
  3. Aesthetics – Looking “Pro” – Honestly this is why I think most recreational cyclist shave their legs. They see guys on TV at the Tour and the racers at their local crit, everyone looks fast and everyone has shaved legs for the two reason above. For a cyclist that doesn’t race having shaved legs shows a level of commitment to the sport, gives a level of credibility with other riders, and makes you look a little more pro.
  4. Aerodynamics – The first three reasons are definitely the most common ones. Aerodynamics is a bit of a stretch and some aerodynamically optimal level of stubble likely exists that is the most aerodynamic, because a textured surface is generally more aerodynamic than a smooth one. But if you have legs like Chewbacca then trimming that forest will definitely lower your drag coefficient.
  5. How it feels – Bike racing is often not conducive to enduring relationships. You travel a lot, usually with a bunch of guys, and while it is tons of fun you’re not spending much time meeting potential partners. When you are sleeping alone on an air mattress at host housing rubbing shaved legs together can be nice… Joking. Kinda…

Other reasons do exist. Comment below with your reason for shaving or not shaving your legs.

Craig Richey is a multiple time Canadian National team member, representing Canada at mountain bike World Cups and cyclocross World Championships. Craig has also experienced all of the five reasons for shaving his legs.
