Oval Mountain Bike Chainrings Review – Absolute Black Oval Chainrings

May 9, 2016 by Ryan Taylor

absolute black oval chainrings

Whats with Oval Chainrings?

Absolute Black sent us a sample of their stunning Absolute Black Oval Chainrings. Why oval you ask? The benefits to oval rings have been discussed and tested for over 100 years. Do they work? Some labs say they do. In fact some of the latest Tour De France winners use them! But there is some contradictory evidence out there saying the benefits are negligible but a lot of it comes down to personal preference.

In the article where we featured oval chainrings, the basic idea of them is that no human can produce a perfect pedal stroke. When a cyclist’s legs are at the 6, and 12 o’clock part of the pedal stroke it is impossible to produce the same amount of power as one would produce while on the down or upstroke (3 or 9 o’clock). The oval chain ring is designed to make this process smoother by effectively reducing the gear (or making it easier) during these stages of the pedal stroke.

Absolute Black Oval Chainrings

Absolute Black claims that not only are their chainrings more efficient but they are also easier on knees and joints. These bio-mechanical benefits can be denied but in the mountain bike world you also have the benefit of increased traction on soggy days (as the force is spread out more evenly throughout the pedal stroke reducing ‘spin out’) but they also come in a 1x or narrow-wide options AND in fantastic colors!

Initial Impressions and Setup

The Absolute Black oval chainrings we received are beautiful. The machining is extensive, and its obvious there has been a lot of thought and work put into these rings.

IMG_0012

Installation is very straight forward. Mechanics are rejoicing everywhere with the emergence of not only the single ring set up, but also direct mount crank systems such as Race Face and Sram where you effectively attach the chainring directly to the crank, as opposed to a ‘spider’ . The benefits are lighter weight, clean look, and to be frank, it has less  that can go wrong. The Absolute Black Oval Chainring went on in mere minutes and has been solid ever since on my Race Face crank.

Performance and Final Thoughts.

When doing the first few meters on oval rings the sensation is terrible. Its hard to describe, but its almost as if your bike is trying to buck you off! I considered turning around and taking the chainring off but stuck with it in the spirit of the test.

After mere minutes that feeling oddly dissipates and you are left riding with ‘normal’ riding sensations. Its a mystery to me why this happens but it does!

While its hard to say if the benefits of the chainrings are real from a power output point of view, the traction benefits are apparent. On a duel suspension sometimes it feels as if you are fighting the bike while on steep climbs. I found the chainrings smoothed out the pedal stroke and generally made for a better ride with more traction. I would go as far to say that I will continue to ride with oval rings from now on as there are many benefits with no real down side.

Chain retention with Absolute Black Oval Chainrings is fantastic. In 2 months, I never lost a chain once, despite having it on both a duel suspension and hard tail bike frame leaving the clutch mechanism off! This goes to show Absolute Black have made a great ring, as they have been ridden primarily on some of the roughest trails of British Columbia.

In conclusion this ring is fantastic. It’s light, it’s pretty, it works very well. I can’t really say a bad thing about it.

How the Sport of Cycling Benefits the Brain

August 18, 2015 by U.M.

How the Sport of Cycling Benefits the BrainWe are all aware that the sport of cycling is one of the best ways to improve your physical condition. You can burn a lot of calories extremely quickly when you are on a ride, plus you will be improving your cardio every time you get on your bike.

However, what people may not be aware of is how cycling can help you in a mental capacity. Research has shown that cycling can help to melt away any stress you are feeling in addition to focusing your mind on a singular task. All of this has its benefits, which we are going to look at here.

Create Capillary Beds

As you improve your body’s fitness you create something called capillary beds inside your body, which are used to better pump blood and oxygen to the muscles that need them the most. This is one of the ways that your body develops better muscle as you exercise.

Best of all, it’s not just the muscles that feel the benefits of this increased level of capillaries. Your brain will also develop more as you ride, meaning that more blood and oxygen get pumped to your brain whenever you hop on the bike. This helps you to maintain a higher level of mental sharpness, which you can take forward into your regular life outside of the sport of cycling.

Increased Neuron Firing

You may vaguely remember neurons from your school biology lessons, and may even remember that they have something to do with how quickly and efficiently your brain is able to communicate to the other parts of your body to get them to execute a task.

When you are cycling, you are forcing more of your body’s nerve cells to fire, and this increased use of neurons causes your body to up the creation of a vital set of proteins and compounds, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor, all of which work to create new brain cells to handle your increased demand.

This means that you are literally forcing your body to create new neurons and essentially building your brain to be better. All of these new neurons will also release what are known as neurotransmitters, so every cell in your brain can communicate more effectively.

How Does All Of This Help?

Increasing the blood flow to your brain and encouraging the development of new cells means that you are constantly keeping your brain working for you. This is especially important for people as they begin to age and they start to lose the mental sharpness that they are so used to having.

This is a natural process, but not one that the older rider needs to submit to. In fact, if you get on your bike regularly you can slow this process right down by stimulating your brain to keep on working for you. This allows you to maintain and even improve your brain volume.

Couple that with the fact that a bigger and more well-connected brain simply works better, allowing for faster recall and more efficient thinking, and there really is no reason why you shouldn’t take advantage of cycling to up your mental prowess. After all, who couldn’t use having higher levels of concentration and superior problem-solving abilities when it comes time to work on an important task?

Best of all, it’s not like you have to ride faster and harder to see improvements. As long as you are providing yourself with a challenge whenever you get on the bike, you are doing enough work for your brain to start seeing the benefits. Keep that in mind the next time you head out for a ride, regardless of whether you prefer road or mountain biking.

There are chases aplenty as a result, including a memorable biking scene featuring the Manly Waterworks water slides.

Premium Rush

great cycling movies, movies about cycling, cycle movie

Dodging speeding cars, crazed cabbies and eight million cranky pedestrians is all in a day’s work for Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), the best of New York’s agile and aggressive bicycle messengers. It takes a special breed to ride the fixie – super lightweight, single-gear bikes with no brakes and riders who are equal part skilled cyclists and nutcases who risk becoming a smear on the pavement every time they head into traffic. But a guy who’s used to putting his life on the line is about to get more than even he is used to when his last envelope of the day – a routine “premium rush” run -turns into a life or death chase through the streets of Manhattan.

American Flyers
