Cycling Rain Jacket – The Best 5

June 14, 2016 by Josh Friedman

cycling rain jacket

A cycling rain jacket is an indispensable garment that will keep you comfortable and on your bike when the weather goes bad. It is not only rain that a cycling rain jacket can protect you from, but wind and cold too. It is a convenient garment that you can slip into a jersey pocket and keep there in case of emergency.

Changing Weather Conditions

If you are heading out in variable weather you should carry a cycling rain jacket in your pocket. Variable weather covers not only rain moving in where you are now, but also elevation changes along with riding at dusk when the temperature drops quickly.

Riding in the mountains where temperature can fluctuate greatly and weather can move quickly requires a cycling rain jacket almost every day. Climb to the summit and you will be overheating but on the way down you are likely to get chilled to the bone because you are covered in sweat and not working very hard while coasting.

Heading out for a ride that will go past dusk is also a great time to have a cycling rain jacket. Once the sun moves below the horizon, expect temperature to drop, especially if you live somewhere that does not retain heat, like the desert or coast. You will be glad you packed it for the ride home.

A cycling rain jacket will also prove useful if you have to stop to change a flat or for some other unforeseen circumstance. Standing on the side of road and shivering is no way to quickly change a flat. Put on your jacket and you can stay comfortable until it’s changed or your ride arrives.

Necessary Features In A Cycling Rain Jacket

Needless to say, the most important feature of a cycling rain jacket is that it is waterproof. If it is not waterproof, it is a mislabeled wind jacket. Read reviews and talk with people that are familiar with a specific cycling rain jacket to determine how waterproof it is.

When riding in the rain and other low light conditions, it is nice to have extra visibility for drivers. A cycling rain jacket should have reflective patches to make you more visible to traffic. This does not replace having good lights but additional help is always a plus as if it’s raining, visibility is also reduced for drivers.

The rear of a cycling rain jacket should extend down past where a normal jacket would to cover your backside from road spray. You will still get wet because your bibs are not waterproof; the tail is there to protect you from direct spray from your rear wheel.

A quality zipper goes a long way to making your cycling rain jacket easy to use. When the rain comes pouring down or you are wearing full finger gloves, a good zipper will make it easier to get your jacket on quickly and easily.

Storing your cycling rain jacket in a jersey pocket is a must. The jacket has to compress down and be light enough that it is not cumbersome otherwise you won’t want to take it with you on a regular basis. Bonus points to the jacket if it is small enough to go in your pocket and still fit other essentials in the same pocket.

A Note On Breathability

Cycling is an energy intensive activity; ideally your cycling rain jacket will allow your sweat to evaporate so you can stay dry inside. It is a tough balance to strike. Your expectations are too high if you expect to be perfectly dry and cool inside your jacket while keeping the precipitation at bay. Claims of cycling rain jackets (or any rain jacket) being waterproof and breathable are usually overblown.

The bottom line is expect to get clammy inside your cycling rain jacket, but remember that it will not be nearly as bad as if you were riding without a jacket at all.

The 5 Best Cycling Rain Jackets

Here are a range of 5 cycling rain jackets that may work for your needs and budget.

Showers Pass Men’s Spring Classic Jacket

Price: $289

Showers Pass is a relatively recent arrival on the cycling scene but they have made a great impression with their rain gear. Their Spring Classic Jacket sets a high bar that other cycling rain jackets should aspire to. It has all of the necessary features mentioned above packed into a well tailored cut. As you would expect from a nearly perfect jacket, this is the top end of the price range.

Castelli Sottile Due Jacket – Men’s

Price: $38 (sale item) – $90

The Castelli Sottile Due Jacket is a very lightweight package that will prove itself useful while allowing you to forget it’s even there with its small size. At just under six ounces, it is easy to tuck in your pocket in case of bad conditions. An bonus feature of the jacket is a zipper at the back so you can access your jersey pockets.

Louis Garneau Men’s Commit Waterproof Cycling Jacket

Price: $85 – $150 depending upon size/color

Louis Garneau’s Commit Waterproof Cycling Jacket has more features than the average cycling rain jacket. It has additional pockets and adjustment points to tailor the jacket to your needs. It will not pack down as tightly as the previous two jackets, but if you are going to spend a lot of time in the rain, this is a good choice.

Pearl Izumi Men’s Pro Barrier Lite Jacket

Price: $65 – $125 depending upon size/color

Pearl Izumi’s Pro Barrier Lite Jacket is what you expect when you think of a cycling rain jacket – translucent, lightweight and not quite waterproof. It will keep you warm and dry under light precipitation, but once it starts pouring, you are going to get wet. It has a race inspired cut to keep the jacket from flapping while you are ripping down the mountain.

Cannondale Men’s Clear Rain Shell

Price: $15

Cannondale’s Clear Rain Shell is about as basic as a cycling rain jacket gets. Until recently, jackets like this were all that existed. It makes no claims of breathability but it will shed the rain. A nice feature to keep the bulk down along with making it easier to put on is instead of using a zipper it has a velcro strip.

Now that you know a bit more about cycling rain jackets, you can head out in less than ideal conditions and still have a comfortable ride.

Best Exercise Bike to Lose Weight

May 29, 2016 by Lee Agur

Honestly, the best exercise bike to lose weight is the one you will spend the most time in. Make sure you select the exercise bike that is the most comfortable. There are two styles of exercise bike: the upright seated position bike or the recumbent bike that has the reclined seat and you can settle back in to.

best exercise bike to lose weight

Upright Exercise Bike

The upright exercise bike more closely mimics the road bike and truthfully, if you are a cyclist, this is going to have you in a more beneficial position to build the required muscles.

Recumbent Exercise Bike

The recumbent exercise bike is more of a sit back comfort bike that has more back support. It is generally easier to spend longer durations on this style.

Best Exercise Bike to Lose Weight

Comfort is everything when you are looking to lose weight. It is easier to sit in a recumbent exercise bike and watch a movie or a TV show while pedaling sitting back comfortably. Intensities may not be as high on recumbent bikes but the average duration is 1.5 times longer, a fair trade off when you are looking to burn calories.

Convenience is another huge contributing factor to determining the best best exercise bikes for losing weight. Factors such as sticking the bike up in the attic or finding one that can fit in your TV room are important. Recumbent exercise bikes generally take up more room, do not sacrifice convenience for comfort unless you are a very disciplined individual.

So What is the Best Stationary Bike for Weight Loss?

Any exercise bike you select is going to burn a significant amount of calories, but if you are a stats person, make sure you select a bike with a display that tracks the amazing features that are going to drive you to work hard such as: a calorie counter, heart rate monitor, distance travelled, time spent spinning or difficulty of workout.

There are a plethora of exercise bikes designed to help you lose weight click here to view them: Best Exercise Bike to Lose Weight.

Vittoria Mezcal Graphene Mountain Bike Tire Review

May 19, 2016 by Ryan Taylor

Vittoria has been updating its mountain bike line with a number of new treads, sizes, and has started using rubber compounds with Graphine, which we have recently written about here. The previous brand name of Geax is gone and the mountain bike line overall looks very impressive with a lot of depth for a less known Italian/North American brand. We put the Vittoria Mezcal with Graphene through its paces and this is what we think.

Vittoria makes no secret of their use of Graphene. Currently they are the only tire brand using it in the bike industry.
Vittoria makes no secret of their use of Graphene. Currently they are the only tire brand using it in the bike industry.

Setup and initial Impressions of the Vittoria Mezcal

The Sidewalls on the Vittoria Mezcal were durable, and we didnt have any issue with cuts in these throughout the test.
The Sidewalls on the Vittoria Mezcal were durable, and we didnt have any issue with cuts throughout testing.

The Mezcals we received were the 29 x 2.2 TNT model or ‘Tubes no Tubes’ casing. It is basically a half-way between a true UST (Universal Standard Tubeless) tire and a normal tubed tire. I set these up as normal with a mix of Stans sealant and slime with no issue. They pump up easily and pop into place without hassle and the tire ran very straight, which is not common.

I ran the Vittoria Mezcal on Easton’s 27mm and 24mm inner wide rims which allowed me to lower the pressure compared to most XC rim combinations. Throughout the test, the weather was remarkable consistent, resulting in slightly moist, to powdery soil as the summer approaches British Columbia. This is the terrain the Mezcal was designed for but unfortunately we didn’t get any wet weather during testing.

Performance of the Vittoria Mezcal

There is no denying the grip of the new Graphene rubber Vittoria is now using. For a dedicated XC tire and tread, it has plenty of bite. I would say the Mezcal has noticeably more bite than a traditional XC tire. Would I say its a game changer? Not really. That being said, as previously mentioned we didn’t get a chance to ride it in wet conditions where I suspect the Graphine rubber shines. Also, I think this tire would be well suited as a 2.35.

The Vittoria Mezcal offers a great tread pattern for fast, dry terrain.
The Vittoria Mezcal offers a great tread pattern for fast, dry terrain.

Durability?

Over the course of one month of solid riding, I found the durability of the tire to be far from ideal. Toward the end of the test I found the sidewalls starting to become thread bare and the rear tire to wear faster than expected. Maybe this is the price you pay for that extra bite mentioned earlier, but it confused me as one of the claims of Graphene is that it extends tire life.

The achilles heal of the Mezcal is its puncture protection. While riding this tire in a variety of terrain(rocky, smooth, XC race course, wilder enduro tracks on a variety of bikes) I found I punctured a lot more than with normal tires. Oddly enough I never cut a sidewall(which I find normally happens in these areas) but always on the top between the tread. I punctured so often I had to patch the tires simply to feel I got a legitimate test out of them. For this tire to shine, improvements need to be made here.

Final Thoughts

The Vittoria Mezcal shows a lot of promise. Graphine rubber is definitely an upgrade in grip and the tread pattern offered is fantastic for fast, fun, riding ideally on XC or marathon type courses. The Vittoria Mezcal sets up remarkable easy, and has a great feel to it on the bike.

Unfortunately I found the tire simply doesn’t have enough puncture protection. Toward the end of the test I simply didn’t trust it come race day. If these issues were resolved and the tire was offered in a 2.35 as well, then it would be a major competitor in the XC category

2/5 stars.

Pros:

  • Great tread
  • Sets up easily
  • Light
  • Graphine works!

Cons:

  • Punctures way too easily
  • Not offered in a 2.35(ish)

Ideal Rider:

  • Someone who rides light XC in a dry-moderate climate.

Oval Mountain Bike Chainrings Review – Absolute Black Oval Chainrings

May 9, 2016 by Ryan Taylor

absolute black oval chainrings

Whats with Oval Chainrings?

Absolute Black sent us a sample of their stunning Absolute Black Oval Chainrings. Why oval you ask? The benefits to oval rings have been discussed and tested for over 100 years. Do they work? Some labs say they do. In fact some of the latest Tour De France winners use them! But there is some contradictory evidence out there saying the benefits are negligible but a lot of it comes down to personal preference.

In the article where we featured oval chainrings, the basic idea of them is that no human can produce a perfect pedal stroke. When a cyclist’s legs are at the 6, and 12 o’clock part of the pedal stroke it is impossible to produce the same amount of power as one would produce while on the down or upstroke (3 or 9 o’clock). The oval chain ring is designed to make this process smoother by effectively reducing the gear (or making it easier) during these stages of the pedal stroke.

IMG_0010

Absolute Black Oval Chainrings

Absolute Black claims that not only are their chainrings more efficient but they are also easier on knees and joints. These bio-mechanical benefits can be denied but in the mountain bike world you also have the benefit of increased traction on soggy days (as the force is spread out more evenly throughout the pedal stroke reducing ‘spin out’) but they also come in a 1x or narrow-wide options AND in fantastic colors!

Initial Impressions and Setup

The Absolute Black oval chainrings we received are beautiful. The machining is extensive, and its obvious there has been a lot of thought and work put into these rings.

IMG_0012

Installation is very straight forward. Mechanics are rejoicing everywhere with the emergence of not only the single ring set up, but also direct mount crank systems such as Race Face and Sram where you effectively attach the chainring directly to the crank, as opposed to a ‘spider’ . The benefits are lighter weight, clean look, and to be frank, it has less  that can go wrong. The Absolute Black Oval Chainring went on in mere minutes and has been solid ever since on my Race Face crank.

Performance and Final Thoughts.

When doing the first few meters on oval rings the sensation is terrible. Its hard to describe, but its almost as if your bike is trying to buck you off! I considered turning around and taking the chainring off but stuck with it in the spirit of the test.

After mere minutes that feeling oddly dissipates and you are left riding with ‘normal’ riding sensations. Its a mystery to me why this happens but it does!

While its hard to say if the benefits of the chainrings are real from a power output point of view, the traction benefits are apparent. On a duel suspension sometimes it feels as if you are fighting the bike while on steep climbs. I found the chainrings smoothed out the pedal stroke and generally made for a better ride with more traction. I would go as far to say that I will continue to ride with oval rings from now on as there are many benefits with no real down side.

Chain retention with Absolute Black Oval Chainrings is fantastic. In 2 months, I never lost a chain once, despite having it on both a duel suspension and hard tail bike frame leaving the clutch mechanism off! This goes to show Absolute Black have made a great ring, as they have been ridden primarily on some of the roughest trails of British Columbia.

In conclusion this ring is fantastic. It’s light, it’s pretty, it works very well. I can’t really say a bad thing about it.

Biking In Zion National Park

May 2, 2016 by Adam Farabaugh

zion 6

The majority of the National Parks in the United States are natural, preserved, beauties of Mother Nature. They are incredible works of geology, force, time, and nature that creates a place that mesmerizes all. One of these places is Zion National Park. Thousand foot vertical cliffs of varying colored sandstone eroded by millions of years of water erosion form a place of beauty, scale, intrigue, and depth that has your eyes captured from the second you arrive.

The majority of the National Parks in the United States don’t allow the riding of bicycles but Zion National Park is one exception. Biking in Zion National Park will be one of the most scenic rides you will ever do as you ride on the park road along the canyon floor which is surprisingly empty despite all the people due to vehicle restrictions. The biggest challenge is keeping your eyes, at least somewhat, on the road with the surrounding rock features, which go almost straight up from the canyon floor, that draw your eye every second.

Where and What Is Zion National Park

Zion National Park is situated in southern Utah in the western half of the United States. The area is a geological masterpiece with Bryce Canyon National Park and the Grand Canyon National Park not too distant. Zion is a massive canyon, or rather multiple canyons, that were eroded by water cutting through soft layers of sandstone down to depths of over two thousand feet. The main canyon is wider at the bottom toward the entrance of the park and gradually becomes narrower and narrower further upstream to the point of which a person can no longer fit. Endless small canyons and gullies dart off the main canyon creating a place of forever exploration. The rock walls in the canyon are sought after the world over by rock climbers.

zion 1
Canyon wall straight up from the road.

Where To Rent A Bike

To experience Zion by bike you will first need a bike. You will only be riding on paved surfaces (you can’t ride on the hiking trails) so a hybrid, cruiser, or road bike is ideal. There are no major climbs unless you choose to ride up to the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel which is a considerable climb but unnecessary to experience the majority of the canyon. To rent a bike in Zion, there are a few options:

-Zion Cycles: Located in downtown Springdale just outside the main park entrance.

-Zion Lodge: Zion Lodge in the park part way up the canyon offers bike rentals. To get there, you must either stay at the Zion Lodge to be allowed to drive to it or you must take the park bus up the canyon road from the Visitor Center. A great option if you only have a limited amount of time but still want to be able to go biking in Zion National Park.

zion 5
Bike Rentals at Zion Lodge

Where To Start Your Ride

There are two main ways to experience Zion Canyon. The first is to drive your car into the park which costs $30 of which is good for a week. The second, and cheaper option, is to park in town, Springdale, or at the Visitors Center before you enter the park. You then cross a foot bridge where you can purchase a “walk-in” pass for $15. This is the best option as you can’t drive up the main park road into the canyon anyway. This is the best place to start your ride from.

Where To Go Biking In Zion National Park

From the Visitors Center there is the main, busy, park road along with the Pa’rus Trail which parallels the Virgin River up the canyon for a few miles. This trail connects to the main park road up the canyon that is only accessible by bus or Zion Lodge guest, which is part way up the canyon. Upon reaching the park road, you continue on up the canyon on the road. Buses pass the pickup points about once every fifteen minutes but since you are moving in the direction of the bus, it will be closer to every 20 to 25 minutes that a bus will pass. Expect 3 to 4 buses per hour to pass you to as few as one if you are riding a bit quicker. One requirement of the park for cyclist’s safety is that you pull over, completely off the road when a bus is passing. They will not pass you otherwise.

zion 2
The Pa’rus Trail where the first part of your ride will take you.

You will continue riding approximately 6 miles (10 kilometers) to the end of the park road at the Temple of Sinawava. The canyon continues but is only accessible via trail and then just by hiking up the Virgin River itself, often reserved for the warmer, low water level months of the year.

The road up the canyon is slightly up hill but is easily ridden by beginner cyclists and kids. The ride back down will be a bit quicker and you go the same way you came up the canyon back to the Visitors Center. If you are a more advanced rider, when you get back to the Pa’rus Trail you can take the road to the left up to the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel. It is a substantial climb with wide, sweeping switchbacks but not overly steep. At the top of the climb you come to a long tunnel that goes through the cliff to the east side of the park. You cannot ride through the tunnel so can either turn around or hitchhike through. During the day, there is often a line of cars on both ends waiting to go through so asking for a ride should not be an issue. Rangers however will not provide or arrange for a ride.

zion 4
The park buses will also carry you bike should you want them to.

Additional Riding

If you are looking to ride more after you’ve returned to the Visitor’s Center, you can ride along the road into town (Springdale). On the opposite side of town a bike path begins that parallels the road. This continues for a few miles but then just turns back into the main road. There are no other side roads close by due to the nature of the canyons. It is not advised to ride this main road despite the size of its shoulder as it can see a lot of tourist traffic.

The Ideal 2 or 3 Day Itinerary

Zion is a big park and taking two or three days to experience it is advised. The best way to include biking in Zion National Park is to arrive at the park by early afternoon, go and get settled at your lodging option, and then do a ride in the park. Later in the day, into the evening offers less people and traffic in the park not to mention the amazing alpenglow of twilight off the sandstone walls. Riding before you go into the park to hike and/or see allows you to experience the park for the first time from the bike giving you the greatest views and experience. It’s also a great way to get whatever drive you may have just completed out of your legs and to get the lay of the land before embarking on any major hikes, explorations, or climbs.

On the second day, take the bus in from the Visitor Center and do one or many of the numerous hikes in the canyon. If you didn’t check out the Visitor’s Center the first day, do it before you go up the canyon so you know a bit more about what you’re looking at and experiencing.

On the third day, if you’re lucky enough to have this many days in Zion, check out another hike or part of the park or even do the ride again or both. Just simply being in the park and seeing everything is incredible.

What Else To Do In The Park

-Angels Landing: Angels Landing is one of the feature hikes in the park that is sought out by most. The hike takes you along a ten to twenty foot wide spine with drops off either side of over 1,000 feet to the canyon floor below. The top takes in incredible views down and up the canyon. There are chains to assist your climb but you should make sure you are sure-footed and not afraid of heights. After going to the top, take the West Rim Trail for a little while to experience more of the park but away from all the people, particularly those going up Angels Landing.

zion 3
Angel’s Landing; quite the climb and view from the top.

-Other Hikes: There are dozens of hikes ranging from easy walking trails to long, strenuous, overnight trips. This Zion Hiking Guide gives a great breakdown of hikes to do and their features.

-Mountain Bike Riding: You can’t go mountain biking in Zion National Park on the trails but surrounding Zion is an area that’s incredible for mountain biking. Biking Zion lists a few great trails to check out.

-Guided Bike Tours: If you’re looking for a guided tour, Biking Zion has a host of tours available from Family Rides, to Mountain Bike Rides, to Road Rides.

-Horseback Rides:You can also go horseback riding in the park ranging from one to three hours from March through October.

Where To Stay – Camping and Other Lodging Options

–Zion Ponderosa Ranch:This ranch is located outside the East entrance to the park high up on the plateau of which Zion Canyon is carved out of. Its amenities range from tent camping to luxurious cabins. Well worth the drive out of the park, away from all the people.

–National Park Campgrounds: Just inside the park boundary by the main entrance are two large campgrounds. One is first come, first serve, while the other accepts reservations although it’s advised to do that far in advance of your trip.

–Zion Lodge – In The Park: Zion Lodge is the only non-camping lodging option within the park and is located part-way up the canyon with spectacular views.

–In Town Options: There are a number of hotels in Springdale along with a privately owned campground both of which can be pricey depending upon the time of year.

–Airbnb: There are a number of Airbnb options located just outside the park in Springdale as well as in nearby towns.

Bryton Sports – Rider 100 GPS Cycling Computer Review

April 3, 2016 by Adam Farabaugh

rider 100 gps cycling computer

Ten to fifteen years ago having a digital cyclocomputer on your handlebars  to tell you how fast you were going and how far you had ridden was the thing to have. If you were keeping track of your riding you probably had a notebook full of rides you did with the date, how far you rode, how fast, and maybe your max and average heart rate if you had it. Those days may not be long gone for some but a GPS cyclocomputer has vastly changed the way we record, save, and share our rides. A GPS cyclocomputer uses satellites to sense where you are and your speed and records it second by second along with any other data you may want it to capture such as heart rate or power output. There are a number of GPS units in general for athletes out there along with ones that are more specific to cyclists. Garmin, you may have heard of them, seemingly dominates the market but there are other quality products out there of smaller companies that are just as good if not better in some regards. Bryton Sports is one of those companies you may not yet have heard of. They’ve been around for a few years and have had time to develop an array of products ranging from simple GPS watches for running to touchscreen head-units for cycling all while using their innovative maps and dashboard platform. The GPS Cyclocomputer from Bryton Sports that we tested was the Rider 100 GPS Cycling Computer.

What is the Bryton Sports Rider 100 GPS Cycling Computer?

The Rider 100 GPS Cycling Computer is a cycling specific, handlebar mounted computer that automatically detects movement and displays your speed, the distance you have traveled, the total time you’ve been riding, and many other customizable things such as heart rate and cadence. It also tracks your ride for easy upload and viewing afterwards whether it is on Bryton Sports dashboard or your preferred ride sharing site such as Strava, MapMyRide, Training Peaks, Fit Track, or others. It offers great value for it’s price with 36 automatic and customizable data points at just $70Usd for the basic model, the Rider 100E.

Features

  • High-sensitivity GPS receiver for fast positioning.
  • No speed sensor installation needed. Just power on and go.
  • Slim and lightweight design.
  • IPX7 waterproof
  • Large and easy-to-read display
  • 7 customizable data screen with maximum of 5 data per page
  • Compatible with ANT+ HR monitor, speed and cadence sensors.
  • Anti-glare display for daytime and clear backlight for night rides.
  • FIT file format for viewing stats on Bryton’s Dashboard or uploading to Strava, Training Peaks, or Fit Track.
  • 25 hour battery life. USB recharge.
  • 300 hour log history. 130 laps maximum.
  • A variety of ways to mount on your handlebars/stem.
bryton gps 2
The Bryton Sports Rider 100 Cycling Computer automatically detects darkness and lights up the rear display to view the data. The computer also stays on securely down the bumpiest of roads, gnarly dirt included.

Facts and Opinion

The computer was very easy to set up, mount, and quickly found satellite reception. The computer tells you that it sensed motion and asks if you want it to start recording. You can change the specifications to record while in motion or to record the entire time. Interval or lap times are easy to start with the push of the large orange button in the middle. It’s easy to access the main menu (press the back and page button at the same time) to view history or to change the settings. You can download software on your computer to manage updates and GPS data but you can create a free Bryton account on their website to upload your data and have it stored and managed on their online platform which includes detailed maps. With the maps, you can also create customizable routes which can be uploaded to some of Bryton’s devices although the Rider 100 is not one of them. From the platform you can then easily view your ride and upload it to Strava, MapMyRide, Training Peaks, Fit Track, or another site.

Pros

  • Very accurate location and speed sensing.
  • Easy to mount with a variety of sized rubber straps.
  • Secure mount, even over the roughest of terrain.
  • Automatic backlight display in low light conditions.
  • Screen automatically adjusts to the number of inputs: speed, distance, heart rate, etc.
  • Easy uploads to Strava, TrainingPeaks, other platforms, or downloadable .gpx, .kml, .kmz, .bdx, .tcx files.
  • Automatically picks up your heart rate monitor if you are riding with one.
  • Is waterproof. (rode in a considerable downpour for a few hours without issue.)
bryton gps 3
The GPS is very sensitive as you can see on the Bryton Sports Dashboard where you can see which side of the road I was on at the turn. And the road was not very wide. Furthermore you can also see the compilation of all the data in an easy to use platform.

Cons

  • The rubber mounting straps seem like they can break due to their slenderness. (They have not however after a few weeks of testing and everyday riding.)
  • The Rider 100 does not pair with a power meter which is unfortunate if you have one as you then have to ride with two computers on your handlebars/stem.
  • The computer does not turn off right away after you come to a stop even after a few minutes which drains the battery.
  • No other negatives to it. This computer does what you expect and does it well.

Price & Where to Buy

The Bryton Sports Rider 100 Cycling Computer is at a very good price for what you get and how it compares to Garmin. It retails for $70Usd and you can purchase it here.

A Simple Bike Rack Review – The Allen Sports Premier Two Bike Trunk Carrier

March 31, 2016 by Adam Farabaugh

Allen Sports Premier Two Bike Trunk Carrier

There are a number of things that need checked off the list when you are trying to find a way to transport your bike or bikes from point A to point B. A few of those might be:

  • A bike rack for the rear of your vehicle.
  • Securely carries your bike/s without worry.
  • Small enough to easily handle and place on your vehicle as well as to store.
  • Is at a price point that leaves you with money to spend on bikes.

The Allen Sports Premier Two Bike Trunk Carrier accomplishes all of these and more. We put the rack through its paces where we found its quality, durability, functionality, and its flaws.

What is the Allen Sports Premier Two Bike Trunk Carrier?

The Allen Sports Premier Two Bike Trunk Carrier is designed to fit on the rear of your vehicle and carry up to two bikes. The rack easily fits on the back of compact cars with trunks and hatchbacks or SUV’s with a vertical rear trunk and window. The rack attaches via five adjustable straps and two “feet” with rubber protectors that rest against the rear of the vehicle. The bikes attaches to the rack via rubber mounts in which the bike rests on and then two rubber straps hold each bike securely to the mounts.

Allen Sports Premier Two Bike Trunk Carrier
The rack is small and folds flat.

Features

  • Small, lightweight construction.
  • Folds up into a small, easily storeable rack. (An issue with many racks of this nature.)
  • The rack opens up and easily snaps into place with two large, spring loaded clips.
  • Rubber mounts on the rack (not the strap clips) to protect the finish and/or glass on your vehicle.
  • Visible red ends on the mounts to avoid having someone run into it while on the back of your vehicle without bikes on it.
  • 5 durable straps to securily attach to your vehicle.

Pro’s to The Allen Sports Premier Two Bike Trunk Carrier

The Allen Sports Premier Two Bike Trunk Carrier accomplishes the goals of a bike rack with ease. It works like it should and the biggest fear with any bike rack is your bikes falling off. You know your bikes are secure with this rack.

  • The strong, durable, and adjustable straps give you the security that your bike isn’t going anywhere even down a bumpy road.
  • A big pro to this rack also is that when you’re not carrying your bikes on your vehicle, you can fold the rack down and easily fit it inside your car. Not an easy thing with many racks.
  • This rack is small meaning the mount arms are not placed excessively far apart. This means that you can easily fit smaller framed bikes on the rack whereas with some larger racks, there is not enough space on the inside of the frame.
Allen Sports Premier Two Bike Trunk Carrier
Rubber feet on the rack protect your cars finish and or rear window. The rubber feet also rotate to conform to your vehicle whether a trunk or a vertical door.

Potential Drawbacks

  • We found that the clips that attach to your vehicle are metal and are not coated with rubber or another protective coating. This may not be an issue but depending on your vehicle and the angle at which the metal straps touch your car, it may rub the paint off. A rubber coating would have been a simple solution to this.
  • Your bike/s may flop around as the top tube is the only part secured to the rack. An additional bungy cord should be used to keep you handlebars from swinging and your bikes from bouncing into each other.
Allen Sports Premier Two Bike Trunk Carrier
The rack works well with mountain, cyclocross, road, time trial/triathlon, hybrid, or townie bikes.

Price and Where to Buy

MSRP on the Rack is $119.99. You can purchase the rack here and at a lower price than MSRP.

SeaSucker Bike Rack Review – The Rack of Racks

March 23, 2016 by Adam Farabaugh

seasucker bike rack

Taking your bike wherever you may drive can give you access to new and different roads and trails, not to mention events across the board be it multi-day mountain bike races or 100-mile charity rides. Depending upon your vehicle, putting your bike in your car isn’t always an easy option and if you have to fit more than one bike, oof, that’s going to be a challenge. You have probably seen a multitude of bike racks on top of cars, on the trunks of them, or in the bed of pick-up trucks. There are a lot of options when it comes to bike racks but they all have their pro’s and con’s as well as price points. The best bike rack is the kind that you can place on your vehicle when you need it to transport bikes and then easily remove it when it’s not needed. The SeaSucker Bike Rack does just that via industrial grade suction cups that securely attach to your vehicle to transport your bikes.

What is The SeaSucker Bike Rack?

The SeaSucker Bike Rack is a bike rack that is attached to suction cups that adhere to a vehicles roof or rear windows. It does this with multiple large 6-inch rubber suction cups that have a pumping mechanism that creates and sustains a vacuum that is immovable. A solid platform with quick releases is attached to the suction cups of which the bike is attached to. An additional suction cup and mount is then placed at the rear wheel to secure it as well.

Why It’s Different

The SeaSucker Bike Rack is radically different than other racks because it attaches to your vehicle via suction cups instead of bolts, pre-installed rails, or a form of straps. The majority of these can not be easily removed whereas the SeaSucker Bike Rack can be removed in seconds just by releasing the suction cups leaving nothing on your roof or the rear of your vehicle.

How Do You Know It Won’t Fly Off?

The SeaSucker Bike Rack won’t pull off on its own due to the strength of the vacuum created. In addition to the vacuum, there are multiple suction cups so if one did fail there are others in place to keep your bike attached to your vehicle. The rack works in any condition from dry, hot weather, to rain, to below zero temperatures.

Advantages of the SeaSucker Bike Rack

  • Super small compared to other bike racks and can be easily stored inside your vehicle should you ever need to put your bike on the roof in a whim.
  • With the small size, the racks can be flown on airlines in your bike bag and easily used on a rental car at your destination to transport your bike. No more trying to find a vehicle large enough to accommodate your groups bikes.
  • With being able to place the racks practically anywhere on a roof, you can position the racks and bikes in a way to accommodate many more bikes than a normal bike rack can carry.
  • Depending upon the type of rack, you can also place your front wheel on the roof. Not an option with many racks.

Disadvantages of the SeaSucker Bike Rack

  • The standard rack is not lockable but multiple styles of cable anchors are available to lock your bike/s to your roof depending upon your vehicle and personal preference.
  • If you have a roof that is not smooth such as one with ridges, the SeaSucker Bike Rack will not work since it requires a flat surface to adhere to. Fortunately it can also be secured to glass so depending upon your vehicle you could simply place the rack on a different part of the roof or rear of your vehicle.
  • The racks are more expensive than some but you definitely get what you pay for.
  • Over time the suction cups can lose suction but pumping them every time you stop keeps them tight.

Types of Racks

SeaSucker has a number of different styles of racks which hold anywhere from one to three bikes. Once advantage with SeaSucker racks is that you can get an one or an assortment to fit your desired number of bikes on your roof.

Bomber

The SeaSucker Bomber holds 3 bikes which is incredible for a rack this size.

Mini Bomber

Seasucker minibomber
The SeaSucker Mini Bomber is the perfect rack for most. Two bikes. Simple. Done.

Talon

seasucker talon
The SeaSucker Talon is perfect for one bike whether on it’s own or placed along with a Bomber or Mini Bomber to fit multitudes of bikes on your roof.

Komodo

If you have a small spot on your roof to place a rack, perhaps on a sports car, this is your ticket. A bit pricey but when it’s the only way to put a bike on your roof you’ll take it.

Also available are ski racks, board racks, kayak racks, along with many other accessories.

Vittoria Mezcal Graphene Tires – Just In!

March 22, 2016 by Ryan Taylor

The new Vittoria Mezcal Graphene plus tire.
The new Vittoria Mezcal Graphene+ tire.

Most people know Vittoria because of their road tires. They make some of the best in the business and have many world championships under their belts to back it up. Vittoria also makes great mountain bike tires but until this year they were branded as ‘Geax’. This year Vittoria completely revamped their mountain bike line. They brought the branding back home to the Vittoria label and introduced something very special.

What is Graphene?

Graphene is a newly discovered material consisting of particles of carbon. In its most extreme form it is 1 atom thick! Vittoria uses particles 2-8 atoms thick in the rubber compounds of many of their 2016 tires, both road and mountain, and also in their newly released wheels.

What are the benefits of Graphene you ask?

1. Enormous surface area: 1 gram = around 2,630 m2 (that’s meters squared) that can facilitate any chemical process
2. High mechanical resistance: approximately 200 times stronger than steel
3. High thermal conductibility: more than 2 times that of a diamond
4. Less density: is equal to half that of aluminium
5. High elasticity: equal to 6 times that of steel
6. High electrical conductibility, transparency, lightness, flexibility and mechanical resistance

This might seem like science class and not a tire review, so how does it perform when added to mountain bike tires?!

When added to rubber compounds graphene can cause the tire to have less rolling resistance along with more grip in wet conditions particularly because of the strengthened knobs which generally make a better tire. If graphene pans out the way Vittoria claims it does, this is a massive step forward in bicycle tire technology. Expect to see graphene not only in the bicycle industry but also trickling into all industries, especially electronics in the coming years.

The tread pattern on the Vittoria Mezcal Graphene+ Tire.
The tread pattern on the Vittoria Mezcal Graphene+ Tire.

So what about the Vittoria Mezcal?

The Mezcal is Vittoria’s XC race/off road Tri/Xterra tire. The 29 x 2.25 size is a great balance between fun, cushion, and efficiency for racing or fast trail riding. The tread looks promising in dry-to-tacky conditions but looks to have knobs too close to perform well on a proper wet and muddy day. The real weight of the Mezcal is 711g which is slightly heavier than claimed.

What makes a quality tire is one that not only performs well but also is durable enough to get you home. Over the next few weeks we look forward to seeing if Graphene is in fact a game changer!
