Riding Kilimanjaro: Rebecca Rusch’s Quest To The Top Of Africa For WBR
The power of the bicycle can be immense. Immense enough to take you to the top of a 19,000 foot peak in the heart of Africa or to change the lives of people in Africa by providing them a means of transportation. Rebecca Rusch, a Red Bull Mountain Bike Professional, uses the power of the bike to make these two happen. Her goal was to raise awareness and $1 for each foot of elevation gained to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro for World Bicycle Relief, a non-profit organization raising money and getting bikes to people in Africa to help mobilize them. The video below highlights her trip as well as World Bicycle Relief and how bicycles really provide a benefit to local communities. A truly inspiring short film.

Taking Your Family Biking
There are a lot of ways to take your family on vacation. There are also a lot of ways to take your family biking. Perhaps the beach isn’t so out of the ordinary but a four person bike towing another few kids? That would be a site you don’t see too often.

Pacing On A Climb – Full Gas or Steady?
If a climb is only 30 seconds to a few minutes long, you can probably smash it, go in the red, and make it to the top while still staying on top of the pedals. When climbs get longer however you can employ the same technique but you will start to suffer and slow drastically before you hit the top. To get your best time to the top of a climb it’s important to properly pace yourself. The guys at GCN do a test in the video below to show the differences pacing can make. They use a power meter but you don’t necessarily need one. You can keep an eye on your heart rate keeping it lower when you first start and watching it climb steadily to your max toward the top of the climb. If you just ride based on effort level, start at a pace you know you can maintain for the climb and then go a little bit harder and reassess if you can make it to the top. Do this until you are unsure and stay at that level. And then when you get near the top, up your level of exertion again. As with anything, the more you do it the better you will get at it. You will know what your limit feels like and what you can and can’t maintain. This will get you to the top the fastest.
Disintegrating Wheel During Track Event – Yikes!
Imagine having your wheel disintegrate underneath you. Matt Crampton of Britain had that happen at Coupe de France Fenioux Piste in the Saint-Quentin-En-Yvelines Velodrome in France. A retired track racer, Martin Vinnicombe speculated that it was likely that the alloy rim de-laminated from the inner part of the wheel which was made from carbon. Regardless of reason, that would be scary, especially if out on the open road. The video below captures the disintegration toward the end of the video.

Une 1ère au vélodrome national de SQY à notre connaissance … Le métier de coureur cycliste sur piste est vraiment très proche de celui d’un funambule : Admirez !…

Chocolate Milk Vs. Sports Recovery Drink
This video may surprise you especially since so much research and development goes into sports drink. Sometimes simpler is better. Also, here is another study backing up these findings; “Chocolate milk and endurance exercise recovery: protein balance, glycogen, and performance.” One note of caution with chocolate milk however is that you need to make sure that your stomach agrees with dairy. If you have any issues, you will definitely be able to tell if you consume a lot of it, like a glass of chocolate milk, immediately after a hard ride when nothing else is in your stomach. If your stomach is good with dairy, go for it.
