Cycling training plans are not rocket science but if you have goals in mind, they are vital to the success of achieving them. Starting out without a defined program is like driving in a foreign country without a map — you’ll get somewhere but your location may not be anywhere you wanted to be. Without a defined cycling training plan, your fitness may not lead you to your end goal.

The Benefits of Having a Cycling Training Plan

The month of May is National Bike Month. By this time of the year you have probably seen or received various invitations to any number of gran fondo’s, benefit century rides, metric centuries, races or recreational group rides. Why not do one of them? You might not think that you’re ready for it but you are capable of much more than you think. All it requires is a plan. The benefits of having a cycling training plan are undeniable. It will make you fit and give you an incredible sense of self worth. Get involved. It could be a way to change your life.

Measure It to Improve It

Cycling training plans do one thing in particular — they allow you to measure your fitness. Once you sign up for a cycling training plan you will see your body, mind, and outlook improve over the next few days, weeks, and months. You will contentiously break your own personal records and the records of your friends, as you monitor your own fitness.

Cycling is one of the best forms of exercise around for boosting your overall fitness and dropping those extra pounds that you have been finding so difficult to shed. It is excellent for your cardiovascular conditioning and the fact that it is a low impact sport means that you don’t need to worry about suffering injuries in the same way that you would with weight training or running.

As the amount of cycling you do increases, your body’s fitness levels improve with it. As such, if you choose to stop cycling regularly you are going to find that everything that you worked so hard to achieve is going to come under threat. Here we look at just a few of the things that will happen to your body if you choose to stop cycling regularly.

What Happens to You When You Stop Cycling

Your Mood Dips

Every time you exercise your brain is improving. In fact, exercise is considered to be a key way of keeping the brain healthy and active even into old age. Exercise also triggers the release of serotonin, which acts as an anti-depressant and generally keeps your mood positive. That great feeling you have after a good workout? That’s the serotonin at play.

Your body becomes used to having this shot of happiness on a regular basis if you are exercising, so if you suddenly stop cycling regularly you are going to find that your mood starts dipping as a result, making you even less likely to start exercising again.

Your Metabolism Drops

Exercise causes your metabolism to speed up, which is one of the key reasons why you can burn so many calories when you are cycling. In fact, it is believed that your metabolism works at five times the speed when you’re on the bike than it normally does. This accounts for about 400 to 500 calories every hour.

If you stop cycling regularly, your metabolism is going to stagnate and you are no longer going to lose weight if your diet remains the same.

Blood Pressure Rises

Cycling is an aerobic exercise, which means that it encourages your body to release hormones that keep your blood vessels in check and ensures that your blood pressure stays at a healthy level. Cycling on a regular basis has been found to lower your blood pressure somewhere between 8 to 10 points every single month, which reduces the risk of heart issues and other ailments caused by high blood pressure.

If you stop cycling regularly you lose all of these advantages very quickly, and you will find that your blood pressure starts rising again. It will start after about a week and in just a few weeks you will find it is back to the level it was at before you started.

You Might Put On Weight

It should go without saying that when you stop cycling regularly you are going to put on weight if every other aspect of your life remains the same. There is a misconception that the gains you have made will last a long time even if you stop.

In fact, that simply isn’t the case. As mentioned previously, your metabolism stagnates when you stop exercising, which means your body’s ability to burn fat is reduced. This means that if you stick to the same diet you are going to start noticing that your body is getting a little softer in areas that used to be lean and trim. Even if you reduce you calorie intake, you are going to notice your tone softening and your waistline increasing. Over time, the effects will only increase, so be sure to keep getting out there and exercising to keep yourself in top shape.

Is A Cycling Vacation Right For Me?Taking a cycling vacation is not for the faint of heart. If your aim when you go on vacation is to simply relax by the pool, or enjoying a drink or two with the occasional dip then you are likely not an ideal candidate for a cycling vacation.

However, if you prefer to get out and about when you are holidaying, and want to experience as much of the world as possible with a level of freedom that isn’t offered by other types of guided tours, then a cycling vacation may be just what you need to sate your appetite for adventure. Here we will take a look at a few of the reasons why you should consider taking a cycling vacation, so you can decide for yourself if it is right for you.

It’s Healthier

So many people spend months trying to get their bodies into the perfect shape for their holiday, allowing them to stroll on the beaches with confidence. In many cases, they will then proceed to completely forget about their training regimen and indulge in the many local pleasures their vacation spot has to offer.

This is by no means a bad thing, however, if you want to be able to enjoy the local area while also maintaining your level of fitness then a cycling vacation is perfect for you. Not only can you indulge like you normally would, but you will be staying active throughout so that you can maintain your cycling fitness levels and jump right back into training when you return.

See The Sights

Have you ever been crammed into a tour bus with dozens of other people, looking at the sights you wanted to see through a window without ever being able to experience them in the way that you want to? If that sounds like something that you want to avoid then a cycling vacation is going to be absolutely perfect for you.

When you have your bike with you, there is no limit to where you can go on your holiday and you have the freedom to choose your destinations, what you go to see and how long you stay there. Instead of seeing the sights from a distance or as part of a rushed group, you can take your time and enjoy them the way that you want to.

Exploring

Moving away from the more famous sights of whatever destination you choose to holiday in, a bike also offers you the opportunity to go out and explore areas that you might not otherwise get to see during a regular vacation. When you can hop onto your bike you have the freedom to explore anywhere that the roads can take you.

Imagine just having a ride and deciding to cycle into a small side street, only to discover an amazing bar or restaurant that is a little off the beaten track. There is nothing better for those who have a sense of adventure and don’t want to restrict themselves to the regular sights.

A Bonding Experience

Many people use their vacation time to get closer with their families and create memories that will be shared forever. If you’re entire family has the cycling bug then there is simply no better choice than a cycling vacation for creating memories while also doing something that you all enjoy.

You can get away from it all with your family and spend time strengthening the bonds that make you so important to one another, without having to worry about accommodating other people or holiday groups. Time together is so much more valuable when you are all enjoying what you are doing, and you are sure to create some amazing memories as a result.
